About Regulatory Brake Testing
The misconception that roller brake testing is the only approved method for heavy vehicle brake testing in Australia can be clarified by examining the various methodologies and regulatory standards that govern brake performance assessments for heavy vehicles
The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) and various state authorities set the standards for heavy vehicle safety in Australia.
While roller brake testing is a widely used method for assessing heavy vehicle brake performance in Australia, it IS NOT the only approved method. A variety of testing methods exist, all of which contribute to ensuring the safety and compliance of heavy vehicles on Australian roads.
Continuous advancements in technology have led to the development of new and advanced testing equipment and methods. These innovations provide alternative ways to assess brake performance, further expanding the options available to heavy vehicle operators and maintenance providers.
The NHVIM specifies 4 possible in-service test methods

Decelerometer
Using a device mounted in the vehicle to measure vehicle deceleration during an on-road brake test, conducted at or above 35 km/h.
Stopping distance
Measuring the stopping distance achieved by the vehicle during an on-road brake test, conducted at 35 km/h.
Skid plate tester
Using a floor-mounted device to measure brake torque (and other parameters) during a stop conducted at walking pace.
Roller brake tester
(load simulating or otherwise)
Using a floor-mounted device to measure brake torque (and other parameters) while the vehicle is stationary, and the wheels are spun on the rollers.
Conclusion:
The SafeTstop TruckStop plate brake tester is an approved method for assessing brake performance in heavy vehicles, recognised by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) in Australia and approved by Transport NSW, VicRoads, Qld Transport .
The NHVR endorses this method as a reliable alternative to traditional roller brake testing, ensuring compliance with safety standards for heavy vehicles.
SafeTstop is implemented at over 1400 Locations in Australia and New Zealand. From the Independent Mechanical Workshop to large dealership groups, Government organisations such as Transport NSW Crash lab, Transport SA ,QLD Police ,TAFE institutes, NSW and in the Heavy Vehicle sector – TMR Queensland ,Transport Australian Defence Industry, Victorian Fire Services , waste and recycling companies such as Veolia, JR Richards, various Bus Operators and Freight companies and Councils
Operation:
It is easy, fast (a brake test takes only 5 seconds/axle) and most importantly very safe to operate! Watch a quick video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dix1jr7AUGU
Cost.
A SafeTstop 3 in 1 brake tester, weight scales and rolling resistance testing is available from SafeTstop now offers a lease or rental options.
Not only is the purchase price considerably less than a Roller Brake Tester, but it’s also a lot more economical to run and operate. As a matter of fact, the complete system needs only a single 240V power plug. You can perform your own easy and quick maintenance service (or we can arrange it), the calibration check is done remotely and cost only $145/annum
Installation:
The system is available to be installed on a flat concrete floor as an “above ground” installation without any concrete preparation needed. Or you can install it as a flush “inground” option, the plate system is only 75ml deep. It can easily be self-installed; the system is delivered to you fully assembled and calibrated. Or we can of course arrange the installation for you.
Accuracy:
The brake test is done “dynamically” which results in more accurate results in detecting faulty brakes as compared to Roller Brake Testing systems, as proven by an independent research study by an University https://casr.adelaide.edu.au/publications/list/?id=1915
Business Protection:
The SafeTstop plate brake testing machines meets worldwide brake testing requirements, including all legal brake testing requirements for Australian government’s and NHVR rules.
The printed report, with date/time stamped photo proof (see attached) will protect your business from potential legal disputes as it guarantees that at the time of leaving the service department, the braking system was working correctly.
